Holstein Friesian Calf

48 adopted so far!
Do you want your pet to be:
male or female?

If you love dairy products then I'm the calf you want. In case you didn't know, my breed is the best milk producer in the world! I can also make lots and lots of delicious ice cream, cheeses, and butter, and I love to share with all my friends! And where I live determines my name! If my family's home is in North America, I am called a Holstein Calf. If we live in Europe, UK or Ireland I am called a Friesian Calf. So no matter where I have to mooooove to, as long as you have lots of grass in your pasture, that's all I need to be content. Well, that, plus a warm barn and other farm animals to snuggle up with in the hay after a long day of grazing in the warm sunshine.

Moon jumping

How on earth did cows ever start jumping over the moon? Glad you asked!

Long ago, no self respecting cow would ever dream of jumping anything higher than the fence around the vegetable garden (although, to be honest, most incursions happened as a result of innocently leaning in for a little nibble - those fences are ever so rickety to a cow who doesn't know her own strength!)

One day a band of gypsies was passing through the region (PnF Land is a favourite destination of theirs) and they invited the local pets to gather round their campfire and tell stories.

Well, the leader of the gypsies (a fine fellow by the unlikely name of Dydimus) was feeling especially mischievous this night, and decided to “spike” the barrel of delicious punch that the pets were sharing.

As each pet drank deeply, their eyes gained an extra twinkle, and they began to laugh and sing, and a few even danced! A formerly shy kitten suddenly snatched up the violin from a very surprised gypsy maiden, and began playing a merry tune for the pets to dance to!

The Scottie dog and the Chihuahua both found the scene quite hilarious, and began laughing and barking with glee!

Well, everyone knows that cows are great fun at a party, and several started a limbo contest, but soon found they liked jumping over the stick better than trying to get under it!

Unfortunately, being among the bigger pets at the party, no pet was able to hold the sticks high enough, so the ever adventurous cows began picking objects to jump over! Dydimus (known as “Diddle” to his friends) was slyly making suggestions to the enthusiastic cows, and they were soon jumping over the gypsy wagons, houses, and then tall trees!

One especially giddy bovine stopped to gaze up at the moon, and with a little whisper in her ear from Dydimus, she set her sights and took off! Imagine her delight at being the first pet to sail over the moon! Well, one by one, each cow had to try it, and the unlikely sport of moon-jumping was born!

Being skilled in the art of poetry and song, the gypsies soon immortalized the entire evening in very quaint verse, which begins with a nod to their beloved leader, “Hey, Diddle, Diddle, the cat and the fiddle…”

No pet knows what the dishes had to do with it, but there is much speculation about that very special “punch”...
