Uni and Jeff are excited to find out what is in store for them in the Autumn Experience! As they enter, they each receive a free map! It reads:
Autumn in Red
Fall foliage in striking hues of red and orange will be seen all around on this tour along the riverbank. Your pet can collect pine cones, sample wild berries and currants, view beautiful plants in purple and red, and perhaps spot some exotic birdlife! Everypet will enjoy lingering on the bridge to view the peaceful scene as the sun goes down turning the river pink as it does so ...
PnF Meeting House
Before we begin the journey we need to check-in here to pick up a trail map and some travel snacks. Be sure to sign the register with how many are in your travel party and how long you plan to be on the trail. Don't forget to take a potty break before you head out!

Episode 2/25

@ Sleepy River Sunrise
Uni and Fergus shook paws, said “How do you do?” and posed for a souvenir photo. “Why am I always on the left?” grumbled Uni. “Let’s change sides.”
“No,” said Fergus. “This is my best side.”
Sleepy River Sunrise
The sun is just beginning to illuminate the sky, casting a warm glow on the sleepy river and the sleepy pets in the village. We begin our journey early in the cool of the day as the PnF weatherpet has predicted an unusually warm autumn day ahead.

@ Sunrise Silhouette
“Time to move on and shake the next paw!” observed Uni. Olivia Anna agreed, but said she was going to stay here awhile and collect pine cones.

As the sun continues to rise and the chill of the morning gives way, some of the hikers begin to shed their warm jackets and stuff them in their packs. A lone plant is dramatically silhouetted in the sun's golden light.

@ Autumn Stillness
Uni and Charbon shook paws, said “How do you do?” and posed for a souvenir photo. “Why am I always on the left?” grumbled Uni. “Let’s change sides.”

As we behold the beauty of the golden leaves in the nearby trees, some clouds have rolled in, obscuring the sun for a bit. Some small fish in the river below are dining on insects that skim along the surface, creating little ripples on the calm water.

@ Orange Splendor
Uni thought the scenery at this new stop was lovely and asked Tigger if it would be possible to set up camp for the night!

The glorious colors of autumn overflow in profusion along the trail prompting a chorus of 'oohs' and 'ahs' among the travelers. We pause and stare in rapturous awe for a moment before proceeding.

@ Ginger Root
Moo and Uni shook paws with each other and compared notes as to how their respective trips had gone so far, and which was the most delicious harvest item they had each come across.
Ginger Root
Ginger root is a well-known natural remedy for some common ailments. If you are prone to stomach upset and indigestion, nibbling on a small piece of raw ginger or drinking ginger tea can help alleviate your symptoms. But it is most useful on the journey as it helps your body to recover from muscle soreness after over-exertion. It will definitely come in handy today!

@ Japanese Maple in Orange
“Shall we take a selfie?” Uni asked Paxton as they drank in the peaceful scene and admired each other’s purchases of harvest produce.

An important reminder when one is out on an adventure: remember to look up! There is so much beauty around us, we don't want to miss any of it, especially when it is something as wonderful as the sun's rays filtering through the orange leaves of this Japanese Maple tree.

“Let’s pose with one of us at each side and I’ll set the self-timer to take a shot,” said Uni to Suzy Q. “It’ll be a wonderful souvenir of our time here!”

See, glancing upward occasionally does have its benefits! As we continue along the trail we see a different variety of Japanese Maple, no less beautiful than the orange one. A treat to our eyes, this one is adorned in a fabulous crimson red.

@ Delightful Dahlia
“I’m going to have to spend a lot of time when we get back looking up what all these flowers are!” said Uni to Sadie.

The PnF gardener has done a fabulous job landscaping along the trail. Pots of flowers have been placed throughout to display an array of vivid autumn colors. This deep pink hued dahlia is delightful!

@ Marvelous Magenta Flower
“I’m going to ask if I can take a cutting of this,” Hipster said to Uni. “This would look just fine in a half barrel in my front garden!”

@ Nectar Delight
"How on earth do you identify what this is from the thousands of things it could be?" asked Autumn Fall.
"Well," said Uni, "you go through a checklist. Like what sort of leaves does it have, how are they arranged on the stem, do they have stalks, what's its habitat; that kind of thing. I'll lend you a book when we get home."

Be still and maybe it won't see you. Look over there on that red flower. It's a Micronesian Myzomela, and I almost didn't see it as it is somewhat camouflaged by the wispy red flowers it is sipping nectar from.

@ Red Berries
"This is a glorious specimen, Gentle", observed Uni. "What a shame that in a month or so all this colour will be gone!"
"You know the best way to get colour in your garden all year, Uni?" said Gentle. "Buy a garden gnome!"

@ Basket of Pine Cones
“Hey, Fergus!” called out Uni. “Come and have some of this—it’s delicious!”
Fergus was glad to relax and enjoy the food Uni shared with him.

According to the note attached to the basket, each of us is supposed to take a pine cone and plant the seeds in the designated area ahead. A park ranger will give us instructions when we get there. A pine forest covered in fresh snowfall is one of the most beautiful sights to see in winter. I'm happy to help add to that beauty!

@ Magnificent Maple
“What an amazing view!” exclaimed Uni after shaking paws with Berry, who agreed with her. Uni was excited to meet up again with Berry. They both took a moment to admire the amazing scene around them.

@ Autumn Rose Bouquet
"This is a glorious specimen, Mia", observed Uni. "What a shame that in a month or so all this colour will be gone!"
"You know the best way to get colour in your garden all year, Uni?" said Mia. "Buy a garden gnome!"

The unmistakable fragrance of roses captures my attention as I leave the wooded area. I look down to see a beautiful arrangement of autumn-hued roses in a white ceramic pot.

@ Perfect Spot for a Campsite
“I’ve written a postcard to Mrs Eucalyptus about this amazing Autumn Experience!” said Uni. “She’ll wish she were here! Where’s the nearest postbox?”
Bonny shielded her eyes and rotated 360°, elaborately scanning the horizon. “I don’t know how it comes about, but they appear not to have thought to provide a postbox here, Uni. How remiss of them!” Seeing Uni’s ears beginning to droop, Bonny added, “Don’t worry, you can post your card after this leg of the Experience!”

Off in the distance across the river I see the perfect spot to pitch my tent and camp for the night.

“Hey, rainbow cookie!” called out Uni. “Come and have some of this—it’s delicious!”

@ Shiny Redcurrant Berries
“These are great as a cake flavouring,” said Uni.
“You can add it to savoury dishes as well. It’s very versatile,” observed Rosco.

Wild redcurrants can be found all over the countryside. They look temptingly sweet to eat, but these shiny red berries are usually made into redcurrant jelly because of their tartness.

@ Red and Purple Leafy Vine
"I wish I knew more about horticulture, Layla" said Uni. "Sometimes I can't tell if something's a plant or a weed!"
"Oh, there's a sure-fire way of telling the difference, Uni! Pull on it—if it comes out of the ground easily, it's a really valuable plant.”

Growing on the side of the bridge is a mass of deep red and purple leafy vines. Deep blue berries hang in bunches just waiting to be eaten.

Henrietta Humperdink and Uni shook paws and then they both admired the magnificent floral display beside them.

@ Teasels and Carnations
"I think I'll take a cutting of the plant in that tub over there," said Uni. The label says it's 'vigorous' and 'fearless'."
Angel sniffed. "That's gardeners' talk for 'an invasive species that will take over your entire garden if permitted'!"
Teasels and Carnations
Teasel weeds are a very common roadside plant. They look beautiful for being a weed, don't they? They are a favorite among crafters as they can be dried and painted any color. These lovely bi-color pink carnations pair perfectly with the purple painted teasels.

@ Autumn Berries
“You know, Cicero said 'If you have a garden and a library you have everything you need',” mused Oliver.
"I don't think I've met Cicero," said Uni. "Is he on this tour?"

Uni is enjoying the Autumn Experience when Gray comes along. "Look! A special prize!" says Gray. Uni looks down and sees something valuable. Gray generously lets Uni keep it!
