In this part of the travel game, the pets delve into Bohemian culture in the area of the city that attracts painters, writers, musicians, sculptors and others who express themselves through art. Whether the pets spend time discussing philosophy in one of the many quaint bars or observing the creation of a masterpiece in a tiny, paint splattered studio apartment, or viewing huge graffiti pictures, they will wind up their visit with a trip to some underground cellars before ending the day with the opportunity to purchase some flowers or an elaborately decorated ridotto mask!

mole was still mulling over a previous attraction. “All that paint coming off, and the crumbling stone! And they call it art?"
"Oh, mole, you need to really feel and appreciate the different textures!" replied Karaca, a trifle condescendingly.
mole sniffed. ”That's like saying you should butter your toast with your bare paw," he said. “You know, really appreciate those crumby, buttery textures (!)”

Come where everyone knows your name. Pull up a stool and place your order. Root beer, whisky, rye and ginger ale we have it all! Plates of nachos and cheese, poutine and wings are also plentiful for the ordering. Don’t let the shenanigans scare you off. Brad nearly stumbled over Karaca, who was lying stretched out on the pavement. “I was wishing I’d brought my watercolours,” said Karaca. “This just cries out to be painted!”

Fanny bent down to pick up a carelessly discarded sweetie wrapper and made to put it in the bin. "Be careful, Fanny!" cried out Karaca hiding a grin. "That's probably part of someone's art installation."
"Oh tosh, Karaca. It's a sweet wrapper."
Karaca looked amused. "A surprising number of entire art exhibitions are thrown away by the cleaners assuming they're rubbish, you know."
Bougainvillea Alley
Some of the best local bars seem to put in minimal effort yet still get it right. Some artists like to congregate, finding fellowship and inspiration in the company of other artists.

Wooden barrels made by skilled artisans and their perfect seasoning with Sherry wines creates a container without equal. In Spanish a barrel is called a “tonel” and the weight of a full barrel is 1 ton. It is the same in English where the origin of the word “ton” is “tun” a wooden wine vessel. A tonelada referred to the space needed for a tonel of liquid in a ship.

"Oh, I like the piece hanging on this wall," said Sweetie pie enthusiastically. "Look at the undulating yet regular metalwork, and the lovely shade of magnolia that it's been painted in."
Karaca snorted. ”That's the radiator, Sweetie pie!" he said.

These small windows are a delightful mix of ornate metal decoration contrasting with the smooth curves of the earth tone frames, all set off by the duck egg blue of the walls. This soft greenish blue stems from the first discovery of a blue pigment in the 18th century, which was then lightened with white.

Here the surface qualities of the water play a fundamental role in giving the composition of the architecture a final effect—acting in this case not as a perfect mirror but by giving a diffuse touch to the colour and texture of the reflected houses.

Morri scrabbled in her rucksack for her folding camping chair. “What are you doing with that, Morri?” asked Karaca. “There's a lot of the tour left to go!”
"I just want to stay here a little while and chill out to the sound of that heavenly mandolin. You go ahead if you want, I'll catch you up!" said Morri.

This beautiful remnant of thick stone wall of earth tones with its arch over weatherbeaten yet ornate wooden doors serve as a proud rejection of the characterless and purely utilitarian. As William Morris said: "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful."

Well-worked graffiti art is typically bold, creative and colourful. It changes the character of the area where it appears. In many cases this is positive, since graffiti art can turn dull monotone buildings and bare walls into interesting and eye-catching exhibitions of the imagination. High-quality graffiti contained within a particular area can raise that neighbourhood's profile as an arts scene. In time, other artists flock there, and the cultural value of the area is increased. This can in the long-term aid the local economy, as tourists head to the area to look at the graffiti, and locally-run tours pop up to show visitors around.

Stained glass is an art form that has been in use since mediaeval times and we tend to associate it with church windows, a riot of bright colours illustrating a narrative. This example has the feel of industrial architecture about it, with its regular rectangular glass panes and muted colours but is nonetheless beautiful.

These stairs, with their quiet cream and brown colouring, and multistorey stairwell view ever upwards, create a definite vibe.

Venetian Masquerade Mask
Handmade by Italian artisans, the Venetian masquerade or Joker mask has a long history. Venice is a city of romance and high fashion and the masks have always held a sense of mystery. Venetians were famous for hiding their identity and taking risks both in business and in love. The wearing of masks at balls and masquerades spread and they would be worn in Mozart's Salzburg and at fashionable Georgian London ridottos.
