Emperor Penguin Chick

Oh hello there. I didn’t expect any visitors down here. Are you cold? Would you like to join a fluffy huddle for some warmth? Maybe a nice mug of krill flavoured cocoa my daddy coughed up? I am willing to share. I hope you stay awhile. I think we will be the greatest of friends.

Put your flippers in the air! Shake the tail your momma gave you! Kick! Turn! Sliiiiiddde! (Yes- watch out for that ice there if you are ill prepared) It is so wonderful to have new friends here. Our dance routines get kinda boring since well, if you haven’t noticed we all look pretty well identical haha. So new stars to show around! Woot! Woot! I hope you are ready!

Oh it can be such a rough fledgling life. Oh so very exhausting. Waddling around. Calling out to my parents for food and warmth. And dancing….do not forget all the dancing. Add in my new job being a South Pole Expedition tour guide and gosh do I ever need a nap. Mmmm, nap! My favourite three letter word after cocoa. Hey! Never claimed I could spell. But sleep? Yup! That I can do. Bonne nuit!

From the beginning of time penguins have been a diving bunch and rather competitive about it. This nonsense about bringing their mates pebbles? NOPE! Only the finest fish and krill will do. It has always been every ‘guin for themself, diving and swimming as deep as possible to find the newest and best treats. Every penguin learns early on in the crèche how important these lessons will be.

Boys being boys it was made into an annual competition to crown the deep sea diver of the year. Training was always fierce and very intense. Chicks would line the beach to see who would come out the champion in hopes of scoring a new strong mate.
