Traditions

lisa
Today at the community center, Scaredy Cat and Bob joined other pets to watch a movie called "Fiddler on the Roof". Many of the grown-ups referred to the movie as a "classic". That meant only one thing to many of the young pets in attendance - it was OLD. Initially, the idea of watching an old movie didn't sound to appealing, but the pets started to show some interest as the main character started singing within a few minutes of the film starting. The song was entitled, "Tradition". The main character sung about the various traditions commonly followed in a typical Orthodox Jewish home. These were things done for many generations that have been handed down over the course of time. At the end of the film, the presenter explained that there are traditions in many aspects of life - and many of those are handed down from one generation to the next. She then told the pets that she'd like each of them to write an essay about traditions that they may have in their families. Scaredy Cat thought long and hard about this and realized he's definitely going to have to talk to his hooman about this. He's not sure if there are any traditions in their family, and if there are, what are they? And what exactly is a "tradition"? Traditionally, writing is not his best subject so hopefully he can write a good essay.

This week we're talking about traditions. Does your family have traditions? Are they old and go back many, many generations? Or have your tradtions started been started in more recent years? What sort of traditions are they? Like in the movie Scaredy Cat watched, are your traditions religion-based that go back hundreds or even thousands of years? Do you do something special every year on a particular day or date to commemorate a particular event in your life? In Scaredy Cat's hooman's family, all girls receive a basket or bouquet of daisies when they turn 13 years old. At Christmastime, some families have a tradition to open one small gift on Christmas Eve before going to bed. Do you have traditions that are based on personal views or beliefs? Whatever your tradition may be, we can't wait to see what they are!!
