Ancient Words
The journey of the remembrance of Passover begins with the record of such as found in the Tanakh, the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament. These writings have been preserved for thousands of years, painstakingly handwritten at first, to ensure none of the details of deliverance would ever be lost.

Opening the Scrolls
To discover the story one just has to "open the scrolls", or open their Bibles, and read. The story of not just Passover, but other times of deliverance, will come alive as you immerse yourself in the people, places, problems, and the promises that God made and kept.

"Wow! Did you know that before, Sly?" asked Choose a name.
"No, I didn't, Choose a name," Sly said. "I'm glad we're doing this experience!"
Remembering a Rainbow
One such time that predates Passover is when God decided to destroy every living thing on the earth because of mankind's sinfulness. He chose to deliver Noah and his family from a world-wide, catastrophic flood, along with two of every kind of species of living thing, keeping them safe on a huge boat, the ark. Once dry land appeared, God promised to never destroy the world with a flood, and gave the rainbow as a token of His promise.

Look in the Book
As you continue to explore the ancient words as found in Scripture, you will see times of deliverance of the people of God again and again. Even if the events happened long ago, and the words describing such are "ancient," the hope they bring of new "deliverances" ring fresh.

Deliverance and Dreidels
Another such story is found in the Apocrypha when God enabled the Maccabees to take back the temple. He then miraculously stretched the supply of special oil for the sacred lamp for eight days until a new supply could be made. Dreidels, a small top with four letters of the Hebrew aleph-bet, remind His people of this time, as the letters represent the phrase, "a great miracle happened there."

Exploring Exodus
For this journey of remembering Passover, a Jewish holy day often occurring close the Christian Easter, one just has to open their Bibles and explore everything about it starting in the book of Exodus. But first - one must look at the first book in the Tanakh, or in your Bible, Genesis, and read about Joseph.

Passover Beginnings
The beginnings of the Passover story don't necessarily start with Moses, Pharoah, and Egypt - but with a young man named Joseph. He was sold into slavery to traveling merchants by his own brothers! God was with him though and after decades he became second in power over all of Egypt. He eventually brought his father, Jacob, and all of his brothers and their families to live in Egypt. Hundreds of years later his people were slaves to a new Pharoah, and that's when Moses came on the scene.

Let My People Go!
After hundreds of years, God's plan for His people began to take place after long and hard years of suffering as slaves in Egypt. He raises up a leader named Moses, who was adopted by Pharoah and lived as an Egyptian for 40 years, but gave it all up to suffer with, and eventually lead, his people out of slavery. After spending 40 years in the wilderness as a shepherd, Moses returned to Egypt at the age of 80 with God's command to the most powerful ruler in the world, "Let my people go!"

Preparing a Deliverer
Before Moses could speak such bold words, as mentioned previously, he spent 40 years shepherding sheep in the wilderness. What lessons such a hard life must have taught him! It must have strengthened his will in many ways. When the time was right, he encountered God at a bush that was on fire, but not being burned up, and discovered his life's ultimate purpose.

@ Bitter Life
“That's incredible, isn't it, Willow?” murmured Sly.
“I'm going to read up about it later," affirmed Willow.
Bitter Life
While the people of Israel had originally come to Egypt to be preserved by Joseph through a seven-year famine, and were protected and prospered, there came a time when a new ruler in Egypt who didn't know Joseph, enslaved them and thus their lives were made bitter, as these green leaves represent, by hard bondage for hundreds of years.

@ Many Tears
Sly and Soxy were so interested in the image before them that they almost forgot to shake paws before moving on to the next stage!
Many Tears
Many times God's people would cry themselves to sleep, their tears wetting the mats they slept on and creating mud on the dirt floors beneath them, while the salt of their tears stung their dry, sunburned faces. Salt, as the bitter leaves pictured earlier, are part of how the Jewish people today remember the events of yesterday so long ago.

@ Hardened Heart

Hardened Heart
Pharaoh and Moses (and ultimately God) butted heads again and again as Moses spoke on God's behalf for His people to be released. Even with plague after plague being unleashed on the people of Egypt by God, Pharaoh's heart would harden, and his grip tighten upon the lives of the people of Israel. An egg is part of today's Passover meal (seder) to bring to remembrance such.

@ A Night to Remember
Sly has seen a lot already, but much more lies ahead. The egg isn't done yet! But guess what - the egg gives him a special prize!
Rainbow's Trail
Leading off to paths unknown, the rainbow beckons the weary traveller to gain new strength and continue on beyond the horizon.
A Night to Remember
Then came the final night and a fateful plague upon all of Egypt as the firstborn of all of Egypt were struck by the death angel. There was not a home, including that of Pharaoh, where there was not one dead. God, however, "passed over" all of the homes of the people of Israel, but only because of one special reason: a lamb.

@ Passover Lamb
“That's incredible, isn't it, Sweetie?” murmured Sly.
“I'm going to read up about it later," affirmed Sweetie.

In order to be spared from the death angel on that night, the people of God were to take the life of a lamb, spread its blood on the door frames of their dwellings while eating it after it was roasted over a fire. They were to clean their plates, so to speak, by not leaving any of it until morning. They were to eat this "Passover" with walking staves in their hands and sandals on their feet, ready to leave quickly when the time was right.

@ Unleavened Bread
Sly and Paxton agreed that the variety of environments and images on this Experience was the best ever! Sly and Paxton exchanged opinions on which their favourite thing had been so far.
Unleavened Bread
They were to eat the Passover lamb along with unleavened bread as their baking utensils were packed up and on their backs. It was a reminder that they were going to be delivered that night, and would need to depart in haste.

@ Bitter Herbs
Sly and princess ♥ sparkles were so interested in the image before them that they almost forgot to shake paws before moving on to the next stage!
Bitter Herbs
The bitter taste of certain plants, like parsley, was also a part of this "Passover meal," reminding God's people of the bitter years they had spent in slavery. Tasting such today helps them to remember "yesterday" and its bitterness, while rejoicing in today's blessing as free people.

@ Journey of Freedom
Sly and Barbi had shaken paws and took some time to take in the scene before them in a companionable silence!
Journey of Freedom
They did indeed depart in haste, the Egyptians actually urging them to get "out of town" so to speak. More than a million Jewish people - men, women, boys, girls, young and old, walked out of Egypt - out of bondage - and into a new life.

@ Red Sea Rescue
Sly was very happy to meet Bouffée here! They shook paws and then spent some time swapping tales of their experience so far!
Red Sea Rescue
Pharaoh's heart hardened one last time after the Israelites departed Egypt. He mustered all of his chariots and soldiers and pursued them, soon overtaking them encamped by the Red Sea. The people of God cried out in fear. God's presence intervened in between the army of the Egyptians and the Israelites with a pillar that was cloudy facing the Egyptian side, and fiery facing the Israelite side, thus giving them light that night. Moses stretched out his hand with which he was holding the rod of God over the Red Sea, and an east wind blew upon the waters all that night, dividing it into a pathway of deliverance for the people of God. They crossed on dry land. The Egyptian army, as they attempted to, were thwarted by angelic pit crews taking the lug nuts off of the chariot wheels, and ultimately by the walls of seawater collapsing upon each and every last one of the pursuers.

Deal Struck
God's people eventually came to Mount Sinai where they stayed for almost two years. It was at this time that God Himself made a covenant, a deal, with His people. He spoke the Ten Commandments to them from the mountain and gave them other laws to live by when they came to a land promised to their ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

@ Promised Land
"I'm seeing things in a new light, Sly," mused Arty.
Sly agreed. "I like learning new things, Arty," he said.
Promised Land
This was a land that flowed with "milk and honey" - a beautiful land full of green pastures, still waters, and much produce, including pomegranates. It was a land that was occupied with people who hated God and His rule, and so He would remove them and plant Israel in the land instead. He had already promised it to their ancestors centuries before and so now it was time to deliver on that promise. Spies were sent to check it out and they discouraged God's people from going into the land.

@ Wilderness Wandering
“It's great to hear this story from the beginning, isn't it, Wrex?” murmured Sly.
“It really is,” said Wrex. "I'm learning a lot today."
Wilderness Wandering
The people doubted God's promise, even though they had seen such mighty acts of deliverance by God on their behalf. He then judged them with a 40-year sentence of wandering in the wilderness, until those who doubted, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, passed away.

@ River Crossing
Sly and Moo had shaken paws and took some time to take in the scene before them in a companionable silence!
River Crossing
The day finally came after forty years for the next generation, those who would now be 60 years old and younger, to go into the promised land. Once again they crossed a waterway - not a sea this time, but a river called Jordan. The leaders put their feet in the waters, which were overflowing the river banks at this time of year, and the waters to the north stopped flowing. God's people walked across the dry river bed, picked up twelve rocks from its midst to set up as a memorial on the other side of the miracle that God had done, and safely entered the promised land.

Sly and Beauty had shaken paws and took some time to take in the scene before them in a companionable silence!
Remembering Creation
Passover is a time of remembrance for the Jewish people each year as it began the journey of freedom and deliverance for them all. God has always wanted His people to remember, even from the beginning of Creation when He "worked" six days and rested the seventh, blessing it and making it holy, calling it the Sabbath. It is a weekly time of remembrance - remembering creation, remembering freedom from slavery in Egypt, and remembering to rest.

Remembering Passover
Each year in the spring, the Jewish people remember Passover and all that God did to set them free, covenanting with them to be their God, leading them through the wilderness and providing for them for forty years and ultimately bringing them into a land He had promised their ancestors centuries earlier. They were delivered from a life of bitterness into a life of blessing, if they chose to follow God's way.

@ Remembering God's Promises
At last the egg ceases to fill Sly's mind with visions. As the last one fades, the egg disappears. In it's place, Sly finds he now has a wonderful prize!
