Harry the Hoot Owl begins his tour of "Maples, Moose & Mounties - Newfoundland & Labrador" by downloading a map of specially chosen locations!
Newfoundland Fort Amherst
The original fort dates back to the 1700's but you won't find remnants of that here today, but you'll still be able to see the gunnery and some of the artifacts from World War II, when Fort Amherst was part of keeping the German U-Boats away. The current lighthouse on the Fort was constructed after the war and stands as a warning beacon to the ships at sea.

"Dunkle! Chef said he's making beaver tails for our packed lunch tomorrow!" whispered Harry the Hoot Owl in agitation. "How horrid! We can't eat those!"
"Relax, Harry the Hoot Owl!" said Dunkle soothingly. "It's a sugary pastry in the shape of a beaver tail, sprinkled with cinnamon or with jam spread on top! No pets are harmed!"
Newfoundland The Battery at St. John
Considered the welcome wagon of St. John's, the Battery is located at on the Signal Hill area, and seafarers pass the neighborhood before reaching St. John's proper.

“’Maple syrup is made from the xylem sap of maple trees. The trees most commonly used are sugar maple, red maple and black maple because of the high sugar content in the sap,’” read out Mischief from the brochure.
“It’s making me hungry, Mischief!” declared Harry the Hoot Owl. “Perhaps I’ll just nibble a corner of one of the maple syrup scones the hotel packed us for elevenses!”

“Here, wrap my scarf around yourself," replied Harry the Hoot Owl. "And you can look forward to a lovely mug of hot chocolate when we get back to our accommodation!"

“Ooh, it's just starting to drizzle, Harry the Hoot Owl!” said Snowball. “Can you hold my torch and map while I dig out my Pac-a-Mac?"
Harry the Hoot Owl good-naturedly took charge of Snowball's possessions while he emptied his rucksack of a pack of sandwiches, a Thermos flask, a pair of galoshes, a bag of toffees, a paperback novel, a bottle of mineral water, an address book, some postage stamps, an assortment of different coloured biros, a bottle opener, a couple of old train tickets, a handful of golden and silver moles, a hotel key, some shopping receipts and a selection of rather battered sachets of salt, sugar and tomato ketchup before locating the Pac-a-Mac right at the bottom. This he donned and then Harry the Hoot Owl helped him put everything back in his rucksack.

"Oh yes, we're bound to. Gosh, Harry the Hoot Owl, do you remember those sharks, and the octopus as well? Poor Fresco took one look and hid in the bottom of the boat!" responded Chester.

The largest Peninsula in Newfoundland, you'll find about half of the population here. Bring your archeological tools with you, you can hunt some of the Precambrian fossils found here as well!

“It says here that maple syrup is a good source of manganese and zinc, and that it has 15 times as much calcium as honey,” announced Harry the Hoot Owl.

Newfoundland King's Cove Cliff
Layers of sedimentary rock create a cake-like display on the cliffsides of King's Cove. Geologists adore travelling here to see the layers of rock, formed over millions of years to study.

"Hmm—now imagine being up at dawn in the cold winter with a great deal of complicated equipment,” said Harry the Hoot Owl. “The work doesn’t stop.”
Daisy waved her glass. “I’ll have staff to do all that,” she said. “I’ll just do the easy bits.”

"I think there'll be quite a few tired paws, wings and flippers when we get back to the tour bus," said Alex, after he and Harry the Hoot Owl had spent some time exploring another long country track to its end.
"Is there a gift shop downtown?" queried Harry the Hoot Owl. "The thought of that generally keeps me going."

When the tide is low, you'll want to see if there are tidal pools of life nestled in the rocks here, but be sure to watch your paws, as the briny kelp can add to the slickness of the rocks here.

Snowball was distracted by the sounds of loud rustling as Harry the Hoot Owl unfolded a very large tourist map, in the course of which he succeeded in knocking Snowball’s hat off. “Put that away, do!” said Snowball, irritated. “We’re about to pose on either side of this amazing scene—the picture will all be of your map if you don’t fold it up pronto!”

The beaches at Stephenville are littered with things left after the tide rolls out. They say one man's trash is another's treasure. You'll find bits of interesting debris padding along here. Different rocks and glasses, worn smooth by the constant tumble of the sea.

Harry the Hoot Owl and Likey came across each other in the hotel bar. "Hey, Likey, what are you going to have?"
"I thought I'd try Canada’s national cocktail, the Caesar, Harry the Hoot Owl. It's made of vodka, clamato juice, tabasco and Worcestershire sauce."
Harry the Hoot Owl looked puzzled. "What's clamato juice, Likey?"
"Tomato juice with clams and chilli!"
Newfoundland Stephenville Crossing
In the most Eastern limit of the Bay of St. George, you'll find this town sports the Barachois Search and Rescue, which assists with water rescues and searches of those in distress. Not for the faint of heart, for sure, but a rewarding profession!

“Wouldn't it be lovely to live in a lighthouse like this one pictured in our itinerary in Nova Scotia? So romantic!" mused Harry the Hoot Owl, nibbling on a taffy lolly.
"Well, I don't know," said Cadbury. "It's not all about drinking coffee and gazing at the sea. You have to run up and down stairs, operate the light and the foghorn, and there may be no running water or electricity apart from a generator."
Harry the Hoot Owl considered this. "Mine would be a luxurious, converted, non-operational lighthouse, then."

Broken Boardwalk
Sometimes being one of the most popular destinations around comes with downsides. In this case, the heavy daily use of the boardwalk has resulted in broken boards in need of repair. Visiting pets hope the boardwalk will be fixed soon.
Labrador Ice Berg
Traveling all the way from Greenland, icebergs can be seen off the coast of Labrador, sailing under their own power, with a destination only they know. You're lucky to see them gliding on the current, full of ice of ages untold.
