"It must be so romantic working producing maple syrup, Dudley," said ceefa contentedly sipping grape juice after a hard day’s sightseeing. "Imagine going from tree to tree to collect the sap every summer and seeing it turned into delicious syrup!"
"Hmm—now imagine being up at dawn in the cold winter with a great deal of complicated equipment,” said Dudley. “The work doesn’t stop.”

Another opportunity to meet a Canada Goose, with her offspring! In recent years, Prince Edward Island has been an important migration stop for the Canada Goose in both spring and autumn.

North Rustico is a charming fishing village just five minutes from Cavendish, home of the Lucy Maud Montgomery Heritage Site. It's a must-see location for all fans of Anne of Green Gables!

@ Canadian Cove
“Wouldn't it be lovely to live in a lighthouse like these ones pictured in our itinerary for the Maritime provinces? So romantic!" mused Dudley, sipping a leisurely fruit juice.
"Well, I don't know," said Eric. "It's not all about drinking orange juice and gazing at the sea. You have to run up and down stairs to operate the light and the foghorn, and there may be no running water or electricity apart from a generator."
Dudley considered this. "Mine would be a luxurious, converted, non-operational lighthouse, then."

Beachcombing is a soothing activity which involves combing the shoreline to see what objects of interest you can see. This could be shells, pebbles, seaglass or even something more unusual! Beaches can be very specific in what they collect, due to currents, geography and offshore habitats. Some beaches are good for driftwood, others for mermaid’s purses.

"Have you seen this in our travel brochure, Dudley? There's a town in Vancouver Island called 'Youbou'—the founders of its mill, Mr Yount and Mr Bounton, combined the first halves of their respective surnames to make Youbou in 1914."
Mateo grinned and thought about it for a minute. "I guess it's like Waitrose in England, from Mr Waite and Mr Rose."
"Waitrose isn't a town, though, Mateo."

“I don't know how to pronounce half of these place names, Dudley!” said NUTTER ruefully.

The blue jay is found throughout most of Canada, with the exception of the far west of the country. It is the provincial bird of PEI. The blue jay’s vivid cobalt or azure-blue tail and wing feathers make an exotic contrast against brown leaves or green grass. However, these feathers are not truly blue, as blue pigment is unknown in birds. The blue jay’s feather colour results from refraction, or distortion, of light by a peculiar inner structure of the feather substance.

“Oh hello, Dudley!” cried Pixie. “Didn’t we bump into each other at the Fiat racetrack in Turin last month? This is quite the change of scene, isn't it?”

A great number of birds, including the Northern Cardinal and Blue Jay, have evolved to remain in Canada throughout the year. Many flock together, sometimes with other species, and huddle to help retain heat. This also reduces the need to watch out for predators. Most remain active by feeding on nuts, dried fruit, seeds, twigs and branches in the vegetation. Many of these species flock to bird feeders, where they supplement their diet with fatty items.

Nova Scotia, which is Latin for "New Scotland", is home to the largest Scottish Gaelic-speaking community outside of Scotland and their flag is a reversal in colours of Scotland's, consisting of a blue saltire on a white field. Peggy's Cove is a small rural community located on the eastern shore of St. Margarets Bay.

"I think there'll be quite a few tired paws, wings and flippers when we get back to the tour bus," said Snowball, after he and Dudley had spent some time exploring another long country track to its end.
"Is there a gift shop downtown?" queried Dudley. "The thought of that generally keeps me going."
Peggy's Point Lighthouse
Peggy's Point Lighthouse is an active lighthouse and an enduring image of Canada. Situated within Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, it is one of the busiest tourist attractions in the province and is a prime attraction on the Lighthouse Trail scenic drive. The lighthouse is operated by the Canadian Coast Guard and is situated on a granite outcrop at Peggy's Point, immediately south of the village and its cove. The red and white lighthouse is one of the most-photographed structures in Atlantic Canada and one of the most recognisable lighthouses in the world.

“Ooh, it's just starting to drizzle, Dudley!” said Po. “Can you hold my torch and map while I dig out my Pac-a-Mac?"
Dudley good-naturedly took charge of Po's possessions while she emptied her rucksack of a pack of sandwiches, a Thermos flask, a pair of galoshes, a bag of toffees, a paperback novel, a bottle of mineral water, an address book, some postage stamps, an assortment of different coloured biros, a bottle opener, a couple of old train tickets, a handful of golden and silver moles, a hotel key, some shopping receipts and a selection of rather battered sachets of salt, sugar and tomato ketchup before locating the Pac-a-Mac right at the bottom. This she donned and then Dudley helped her put everything back in her rucksack.

From across the road, Katrice surveyed the current stop on their map. “Would you fancy living there, Dudley?”
"Well, it's certainly a bit different to where we live," said Dudley. "But I could get used to it, I daresay!"

Bras d'Or Lake is an estuary in the centre of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. It has a connection to the open sea, and is tidal. It also has inflows of fresh water from rivers, making the brackish water a very productive natural habitat. It was designated the Bras d'Or Lake Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2011.

Yarmouth is a port town in Nova Scotia, whose industries include fishing and tourism. It is the terminus of a ferry service to Portland, Maine. It was formerly a major shipbuilding centre.

@ We All Live in a Yellow Rowing Boat
"DrakeStingray! Chef said he's making beaver tails for our packed lunch tomorrow!" whispered Dudley in agitation. "How horrid! We can't eat those!"
"Relax, Dudley!" said DrakeStingray soothingly. "It's a sugary pastry in the shape of a beaver tail, sprinkled with cinnamon or with jam spread on top! No pets are harmed!"

When you've done rowing round the coastline in your colourful boat, pull up an equally colourful chair to relax by this small bay! Nova Scotia has an incredibly long coastline compared to its overall size due to all its ins and outs, so there are numerous tiny inlets and bays all around the island.
