An idylllic scene! You wouldn't be able to tell from this gorgeously relaxing view that PEI is Canada’s birthplace, with the confederation being signed here in 1867. The recently-constructed Confederation Bridge allows easy access from New Brunswick to some of Canada’s finest beaches and best golf courses!

“Listen to this, Freyja,” said Beekie. “’Culinary expert Delia Smith described maple syrup to be a unique ingredient, smooth and silky-textured, with a sweet, distinctive flavour—hints of caramel with overtones of toffee—and a rare colour, amber set alight. The maple flavour is uniquely different from any other.’”
“We trust our Delia,” intoned Freyja solemnly. “Pass the jug!”

The trees growing atop this small island-in-an-island are thriving as the Gulf of St Lawrence laps close to their roots in this gentle coastal scene from Prince Edward Island!

@ Solicitous Mum
“Ooh, it's just starting to drizzle, Beekie!” said Cashmere. “Can you hold my torch and map while I dig out my Pac-a-Mac?"
Beekie good-naturedly took charge of Cashmere's possessions while she emptied her rucksack of a pack of sandwiches, a Thermos flask, a pair of galoshes, a bag of toffees, a paperback novel, a bottle of mineral water, an address book, some postage stamps, an assortment of different coloured biros, a bottle opener, a couple of old train tickets, a handful of golden and silver moles, a hotel key, some shopping receipts and a selection of rather battered sachets of salt, sugar and tomato ketchup before locating the Pac-a-Mac right at the bottom. This she donned and then Beekie helped her put everything back in her rucksack.
Solicitous Mum
Another opportunity to meet a Canada Goose, with her offspring! In recent years, Prince Edward Island has been an important migration stop for the Canada Goose in both spring and autumn.

“I'm enjoying the tour very much but it's getting quite cold, isn't it, Beekie?” shivered Choose a name.
“Here, wrap my scarf around yourself," replied Beekie. "And you can look forward to a lovely mug of hot chocolate when we get back to our accommodation!"

While Prince Edward Island is known for its splendid coastline and farming communities, its capital, Charlottetown, is home to Victorian government buildings and the modern Confederation Centre of the Arts, with a theatre and art gallery.

@ Red Sand Beach
“’Maple syrup is made from the xylem sap of maple trees. The trees most commonly used are sugar maple, red maple and black maple because of the high sugar content in the sap,’” read out Miss Mousse from the brochure.
“It’s making me hungry, Miss Mousse!” declared Beekie. “Perhaps I’ll just nibble a corner of one of the maple syrup scones the hotel packed us for elevenses!”

Prince Edward Island, nestling in the Gulf of St Lawrence, is renowned for its red-sand beaches, lighthouses and fertile farmland. Lovers of Anne of Green Gables should put it on their bucket list!

"Me too!" said Beekie. "It's great on this tour, isn't it?"

"Hey, look at Shuswap in the brochure," said Spot. "'The city's new claim to fame: the world’s largest treble clef. It is more than 42 feet (13m) high!'"
"Wow! Is there music to go with it?" asked Beekie.
"Yup. The first notes of O Canada," responded Spot.
"That's a lovely tune!"

@ North Rustico, PEI
"I think there'll be quite a few tired paws, wings and flippers when we get back to the tour bus," said Itchy, after she and Beekie had spent some time exploring another long country track to its end.
"Is there a gift shop downtown?" queried Beekie. "The thought of that generally keeps me going."
North Rustico, PEI
North Rustico is a charming fishing village just five minutes from Cavendish, home of the Lucy Maud Montgomery Heritage Site. It's a must-see location for all fans of Anne of Green Gables!

lily was distracted by the sounds of loud rustling as Beekie unfolded a very large tourist map, in the course of which he succeeded in knocking lily’s hat off. “Put that away, do!” said lily, irritated. “We’re about to pose on either side of this amazing scene—the picture will all be of your map if you don’t fold it up pronto!”

Beachcombing is a soothing activity which involves combing the shoreline to see what objects of interest you can see. This could be shells, pebbles, seaglass or even something more unusual! Beaches can be very specific in what they collect, due to currents, geography and offshore habitats. Some beaches are good for driftwood, others for mermaid’s purses.

Beekie and Rusty were entranced on reaching this Canadian viewpoint and eagerly posed for a picture standing on either side!

“What have you got in your rucksack, Shelby?” asked Beekie. “It looks very full!”
“I’ve come prepared for anything, Beekie,” responded Shelby. “There’s canvas deck shoes, tennis shoes, flip-flops, sandshoes, walking boots, sandals, loafers—you name it, I’ve got it!”

Canadian Blue Jay
The blue jay is found throughout most of Canada, with the exception of the far west of the country. It is the provincial bird of PEI. The blue jay’s vivid cobalt or azure-blue tail and wing feathers make an exotic contrast against brown leaves or green grass. However, these feathers are not truly blue, as blue pigment is unknown in birds. The blue jay’s feather colour results from refraction, or distortion, of light by a peculiar inner structure of the feather substance.

“Let's just drink in this scene, shall we, Beekie?” suggested Glenda Fluster, sinking down on a convenient tree stump.
Beekie agreed it was well worth spending some time there!
Northern Cardinal
A great number of birds, including the Northern Cardinal and Blue Jay, have evolved to remain in Canada throughout the year. Many flock together, sometimes with other species, and huddle to help retain heat. This also reduces the need to watch out for predators. Most remain active by feeding on nuts, dried fruit, seeds, twigs and branches in the vegetation. Many of these species flock to bird feeders, where they supplement their diet with fatty items.

@ Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia
"It must be so romantic working producing maple syrup, Beekie," said Nicole contentedly sipping grape juice after a hard day’s sightseeing. "Imagine going from tree to tree to collect the sap every summer and seeing it turned into delicious syrup!"
"Hmm—now imagine being up at dawn in the cold winter with a great deal of complicated equipment,” said Beekie. “The work doesn’t stop.”
Nicole waved her glass. “I’ll have staff to do all that,” she said. “I’ll just do the easy bits.”
Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia, which is Latin for "New Scotland", is home to the largest Scottish Gaelic-speaking community outside of Scotland and their flag is a reversal in colours of Scotland's, consisting of a blue saltire on a white field. Peggy's Cove is a small rural community located on the eastern shore of St. Margarets Bay.

"Have you seen this in our travel brochure, Beekie? There's a town in Vancouver Island called 'Youbou'—the founders of its mill, Mr Yount and Mr Bounton, combined the first halves of their respective surnames to make Youbou in 1914."
blade grinned and thought about it for a minute. "I guess it's like Waitrose in England, from Mr Waite and Mr Rose."
"Waitrose isn't a town, though, blade."

Peggy's Point Lighthouse
Peggy's Point Lighthouse is an active lighthouse and an enduring image of Canada. Situated within Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, it is one of the busiest tourist attractions in the province and is a prime attraction on the Lighthouse Trail scenic drive. The lighthouse is operated by the Canadian Coast Guard and is situated on a granite outcrop at Peggy's Point, immediately south of the village and its cove. The red and white lighthouse is one of the most-photographed structures in Atlantic Canada and one of the most recognisable lighthouses in the world.

Imagine all the boating parties that have set off from this secluded location in Nova Scotia with its own tiny beach! It's just the thing for a leisurely rowing boat trip followed by a small barbecue!

@ Bras d'Or Lake
Beekie opened his rucksack to change his hat. Trix could see Beekie had a large, floppy sunhat, a balaclava, a rain hat, a woolly bobble hat, a beanie, a deerstalker hat and a swimming cap!
“Did you bring a fez too?” Trix asked Beekie.
Bras d'Or Lake
Bras d'Or Lake is an estuary in the centre of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. It has a connection to the open sea, and is tidal. It also has inflows of fresh water from rivers, making the brackish water a very productive natural habitat. It was designated the Bras d'Or Lake Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2011.

Yarmouth, Nova Scotia
Yarmouth is a port town in Nova Scotia, whose industries include fishing and tourism. It is the terminus of a ferry service to Portland, Maine. It was formerly a major shipbuilding centre.

When you've done rowing round the coastline in your colourful boat, pull up an equally colourful chair to relax by this small bay! Nova Scotia has an incredibly long coastline compared to its overall size due to all its ins and outs, so there are numerous tiny inlets and bays all around the island.

Lighthouses are a common sight along the Nova Scotia coastline and remain an important symbol of the past. They beautifully highlight the picturesque coastal landscape. Some are open for viewing while others can be observed when passing on foot or on bicycle.
