Dove-cotes hollowed out of most of the hills around the area. The excrement from pigeons was used as fertilizer. To keep the pigeons safe white paint made from egg and plaster was painted on the sides of the dove-cote to keep martins and foxes from getting at the pigeons and their eggs.
