Aslan arrived for the Singleton Pets Three-City Valentine Event and pausing on the bridge looking at the majestic exterior of the hotel felt very nervous. Perhaps he shouldn't have come? This was for braver souls than he was! But then, screwing up his courage, he finished crossing the bridge and entered the hotel.

Aslan very much enjoyed the fondue they shared that night! It was lovely to partake of such an iconic and delicious Swiss recipe, and juggling forkfuls of bread dipped in cheese sauce broke the ice amongst all the pets!

The view from his room was absolutely beautiful. The next morning Aslan felt his spirits rising as he happily regarded the seagulls flying low over the lake outside.

While Aslan was waiting for breakfast time, he heard a gentle tap at the door. It was a sweet little bear clutching a gift of a rose, and taped to the stalk were details of the delights for the day ahead! Aslan felt he had made his first friend in Switzerland!

It was their first expedition in Lucerne and to Aslan's horror, it was a cable car trip! Oh no! Heights were awful! To overcome his fear, he concentrated on talking to the pets on either side of him and taking careful note of their answers. Luckily this seemed to work!

Aslan gulped at the view from the top. Never, he felt, had he ever been so high up before! It was like being in an aeroplane looking down at the clouds! But he knew at the same time it was going to be a very treasured memory in future, so he made an effort to think of something other than his nerves.

They stopped for an al fresco picnic. It was cold but the air was very fresh and it felt healthy. Aslan had to sit with his back to the deep drop just past the line of fir trees. Then he decided to confide in the tour guide about his fears, and the guide's sympathetic, calm good sense made him feel a lot better.

The group, under careful supervision, tackled a spot of mountain climbing. Aslan nearly backed out of the activity, but talked himself round, reassuring himself that it was perfectly safe at this beginner level!

Aslan was a little late for lunch, having taken a nap, and searched for his group. A waiter approached bearing menus. "Willkommen," he said. "Haben Sie Nahrungsmittelunverträglichkeite?" Aslan gasped, wishing he had brought his German dictionary! "Um ... ", he ventured. Fortunately the tour guide hurried over. "He's just asking if you have any food intolerances. Never mind! Come, we're over here."

The tour guide related the famous story of William Tell; the arrow shot into the apple on his son's head, & a lot more. The next activity was archery. Aslan was nervous as he felt he had two left paws when it came to sport and didn't want to look incompetent in front of the others. But he didn't back out and in the end performed quite well!

That afternoon the group went for a walk along the lake. Aslan realised he was getting much more exercise than he normally would, and bravely resolved, when he got back home, to do at least some exercise every single day, even if it was just five minutes!

Aslan and the rest of the group were invited on board a paddlesteamer for a tea party! They were served with delicious light snacks followed by a selection of cheeses, whilst enjoying the scenery on either side of Lake Lucerne. They were all sorry when it ended!

In the evening they had been invited to a Swiss dancing event, in which they would take part. Aslan hated the thought of this! If only he had a good friend to go with! But he bravely put his best paw forward. After all, if he was the worst of all of them, at least he would be giving others more confidence!

The next day, they all took part in an orienteering activity. Aslan was in charge of reading the compass, and he accidentally sent them all south instead of north! But he bravely owned up to his mistake, and to his surprise no one minded at all -- they were having too much fun for that!

At elevenses time, the tour guide took them for Kaffee und Kuchen at a very grand-looking Schloss. Aslan felt nervous about being in such a magnificent setting, and perhaps being spoken to in German! But he discussed his fears with a few fellow-guests in the group and realised he could be brave and just possibly enjoy the event!

A hike had been planned as a little excursion. Aslan really didn't feel like going; he was so tired after all the previous activities that day. As he was dragging him hiking boots over his paws, he decided to be brave, and to explain to the tour guide that he just didn't feel up to it. The guide was very understanding, and Aslan realised that he wasn't the only one not feeling quite up to the hike!

The Swiss claim to make the best chocolate in the world, and the people of Lucerne proudly claim to make the best chocolate in Switzerland! The pets visited a chocolate making factory in Lucerne and most purchased a delicious souvenir of their visit!

Aslan hired a car to take a few of the pets on a tour of the city. This meant he had to gather all his courage together to negotiate driving in a strange city, where some of the traffic signs were in German and wholly unfamiliar, and distances were in kilometres!
