It's that time of the year again... Halloween is coming and as usual in this household, they kept the tradition alive by reading Halloween poems on the eve of Halloween after the children came back from trick or treating in the neighborhood. For years Quswa, the pet of the house, got the privilege of listening to it all. I saw a ghost

When witches go riding,
and black cats are seen,
the moon laughs and whispers,
‘tis near Halloween.

Creeping, crawling creatures scurry in the night,
Rats and bats and spiders, nibble, out of sight,
Don’t look too carefully,
You’ll get a nasty fright!

Vampires’ stealthy footsteps cross the wooden floor,
Werewolves howling fearfully, beyond your kitchen door,
Don’t look outside now,
You won’t want to find out more!

Zombies with their wild eyes and their soulless grins,
Skeletons with their bony cheeks and their missing skins,
Listen for their rattling sounds,
But do not let them in!

Halloween is coming, what a scary night,
Ghosties, ghouls and goblins dancing in the light,
Here they are all coming now, feel the spooky beat,
If you listen, hear ‘em shout:

“TRICK OR TREAT!”

Spooky Halloween Night

It’s very spooky on Halloween night.
The ghosts and goblins will give you a fright.

Watch your back, do not be blind.
If you’re not careful, who knows what you’ll find?

You might see things like little black bats,
Or you might see things like scary black cats.

On every porch there’s a pumpkin or two,
With their creepy grins smiling at you.

It’s very spooky on Halloween night.

SKELETON PARADE
The skeletons are out tonight,they march about the street,
With bony bodies, a bony head and bony hands and feet.
Bony bony bony bones with nothing in between,
Up and down and all around
they march on Halloween.

Witch witch, where do you fly? Under the clouds and over the sky.
Witch, witch, what do you eat? Little black apples from Hurricane Street.
Witch, witch, what do you drink? Vinegar and good red ink.
Witch, witch, where do you sleep? Up in the clouds where the pillows are cheap.

How I wonder where you’re at.
Up above the world so high.
Like a mouse who’s learned to fly.

Glad there are no flying cats!

Haunted House

There's a house upon the hilltop
We will not go inside
For that is where the witches live,
Where ghosts and goblins hide.

Tonight they have their party,
All the lights are burning bright,
But oh we will not go inside
The haunted house tonight.

The demons there are whirling
And the spirits swirl about.
They sing their songs to Halloween.
"Come join the fun," they shout.

But we do not want to go there
So we run with all our might
And oh we will not go inside
The haunted house tonight.

Jack O' Lantern Grin

We bought a fat orange pumpkin,
The plumpest sort they sell.
We neatly scooped the inside out
and only left the shell.
We carved a funny funny-face
of silly shape and size,
A pointy nose,
a jagged mouth and two enormous eyes.
We set it in a window
and we put a candle in,
Then lit it up
for all to see
Our jack-o-lantern grin.

Spooks

There's a goblin at my window,
A monster by my door.
The pumpkin at my table
Keeps on smiling more and more.
There's a ghost who haunts my bedroom,
A witch whose face is green.
They used to be my family,
Till they dressed for Halloween.

THE NIGHT OF HALLOWEEN.
The Harvest moon fills the sky
A wicked witch goes flying by
Ghosts and goblins..skeleton’s too.
Moaning and groaning, waiting for you

Black cats prowl the graveyard plots
Witches cook in cauldron pots
Cemetery ghouls roam the ground
Not one unopened grave is found

Tombstones are an eerie sight
Shadows dance in full moon light
The haunted house on the hill
Walk in there and you get a chill

Jack-o-lanterns eyes so bright
Trick or Treaters scream in fright
It’s a time like you’ve never seen
Tonight’s the night of Halloween.

Feeling a little restless Quswa got up to stretch his paws and stopped to look out the window. It was such a beautiful night with the full moon and the bats flapping in the distance.

As it was getting late Quswa made his way to his bedroom to curl up upon his bed. I think I have time for one more poem before I tuck in for the night he thought.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN
It`s late and we are sleepy,
The air is cold and still.
Our jack-o-lantern grins at us
Upon the window sill.
We`re stuffed with cake and candy
And we`ve had a lot of fun,
But now it`s time to go to bed
And dream of all we`ve done.
We`ll dream of ghosts and goblins
And of witches that we`ve seen,
And we`ll dream of trick-or-treating
On this happy Halloween.
