The huge Old Town Square (Stary Rynek) is one of Europe’s nicest, and is lined by fabulous historic attractions, restaurants and nightlife. The Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul is Poland’s oldest cathedral. Poznań’s 16th-century town hall features a clock tower from which two mechanical goats appear at noon to lock horns.

The journey to Poznan began during a foggy dusk. The coach, bearing its passengers eager to experience the beauty of the city, rolled slowly along the cobblestone streets as the last vestiges of daylight struggled to penetrate the thick veil of mist. The pets were hungry and tired and were heartily glad to have reached their accommodation for the next two nights. A delicious meal accompanied by kvass soon restored them sufficiently from the rigours of the journey, and they left the dining room to sit by crackling log fires in the residents' lounge and talk about what the next few days held in store for them.

@Ain't Nothing But a Polish Hound Dog

As their coach rumbled along a quiet country lane the next day, a friendly Polish hound dog ambled out to greet them, wagging its tail with cheerful abandon. The dog's fur was a warm, golden brown, reminiscent of the wheat fields they had passed earlier in the day. It trotted alongside the coach for a short distance before turning back to its farm, a brief but heartwarming encounter with the local fauna.

Suddenly, the pets were treated to a thrilling sight! An aerobatic display team in seven aircraft flew in tight formation across the sky above them, trailing coloured smoke as they zoomed onwards! It was a splendid celebration of courage, daring and precision flying.

The pets' spirits lifted as they approached a quaint countryside café, its windows steamed with the warmth of the interior. The scent of freshly baked apple cake wafted through the air, mingling with the aroma of strong, dark coffee. Upon entering, they were greeted by the sight of intricately painted eggs displayed on the wooden shelves, a vibrant tapestry of folk art celebrating the region's culture and traditions. The eggs, adorned with patterns of deep reds, blues, and greens, reflected the light, creating a kaleidoscope of color that danced across the room.

The hotel's interior was adorned with a festive ambiance, with soft lights and welcoming aromas wafting from the nearby restaurant. Stepping inside is like taking a journey through the eras, as the shop's shelves are adorned with an eclectic array of vintage treasures—ornate vases, tarnished silverware and fascinating leather-bound tomes. Surrounding the antique oasis are a collection of inviting cafés and restaurants, their outdoor seating areas spilling out onto the spacious plaza. Cream-coloured parasols provide welcome shade from the sun, as patrons sip steaming cups of aromatic coffee or savour hearty local pierogi. The air is alive with the chatter of friends and the laughter of families, creating a convivial atmosphere that makes this market square the true pulse of the city.

The tiles, known as "Torunian tiles," were meticulously laid by skilled artisans, who had developed a technique that allowed for both waterproofing and insulation. The method involved placing the tiles in a herringbone pattern, creating a durable and aesthetically pleasing surface that could withstand the harsh Polish winters.
As the pets wandered through the narrow cobble­stone streets, they noticed that each roof was a canvas unto itself. Some showcased simple geometric designs, while others displayed complex motifs that included animals, floral elements, and even mythical creatures. Each pattern had a story to tell, reflecting the status, wealth, and sometimes the whimsy of the building's original owner. The tiles, which were often produced locally, also served as a means of displaying civic pride, with the city's emblem frequently incorporated into the designs.
One of the most striking features of these tiles was their longevity. Despite the passage of centuries, the vibrant colors remained unfaded, a testament to the quality of the materials and craftsmanship. The tiles were produced from local clay and fired in kilns at high temperatures, which resulted in their durability. Over the years, the elements had caressed the tiles, giving them a slightly uneven texture that added to their charm.
