It was the season of romance and pairing up. In the vibrant heart of the forest, a king­fisher named Kora flutter­ed her azure wings at her new mate with a sigh that danced through the emerald leaves. She perched on a branch over­looking the gush­ing river, her eyes gleam­ing with a hint of envy as she observed the industrious flurry of feather­ed architects. The air buzz­ed with the rhythm of beaks chipping and weaving, a harmony of creation that paint­ed a picture of home and family.

Yet Kora felt like a solitary note in this pattern of nest-building, for she was bound to the traditions of her kind, destined to dig earthy tunnels by the riverbank to lay her eggs. Her heart yearned to build a nest for her first little brood! Her new partner was sceptical. "I don't know, Kora," he sighed. "Earth tunnels: that's all my family have ever done!"

Seeing his low-spirited helpmeet's feathers and tail drooping, he added, "Mind you, I'd just as soon not have to fly right into a river bank, beak first, to dig out a tunnel! It looks like really hard work! You'd better ask around; see if it's even possible for us to have a nest in a tree instead."

Her curiosity piqued, Kora decided to seek counsel from the wise Victoria Crowned Pigeon, whose plumage shimmered like moonlit clouds. She approached with a bow, her crest fluttering gently. "Your Highness," she began, "I wish to break from the chains of our ancestry and craft a nest like you, high in the trees, cradling my young in a soft embrace."

The Crowned Pigeon regarded her with a knowing gaze. "Kora, the path you wish to tread is not an easy one," she warned. "Each bird has its own way, tailored by the whispers of the earth and the sky. Yet, I shall share what I know." With a grace that belied her size, the pigeon described the intricacies of selecting the right branch and weaving together a sturdy basket of twigs and leaves.

Undeterred, Kora continued her quest, seeking wisdom from the tiniest bird, a female Bee Hummingbird, whose wings blurred as she hovered. "To build in the air," the hummingbird said, "you must be as swift and precise as I am. But fear not, for even in the vastness of the trees, there is a place for your nest if you have the courage to find it."

Kora listened intently as the hummingbird spoke of the art of nest-building, of finding the perfect spot where the branches met in a cradle of safety. "Your nest must be small but mighty," she said, "and you must gather the finest spider silk to hold it together, for it is stronger than any thread."

Her next visit was to the Great Curassow, whose nest lay in a clearing, a tapestry of leaves and branches. "You must be vigilant, for the trees are not always welcoming to those who do not know their ways," the curassow cautioned, her feathers ruffling in the warm breeze. "But if you persist and learn, you may find that the forest opens its arms to you."

The Great Grey Owl, with her piercing gaze, spoke next. "The high branches may offer protection from predators, but they also leave you exposed to the whims of the wind and rain. Yet, if you build wisely and your heart is true, even the storms will pass."

The female bluetit, on an expedition gathering soft moss to line her nest, chirped from a nearby tree, offering her own words of wisdom. "Choose a place hidden, yet accessible," she said. "Where the young ones can peek at the world below, but not so easily be seen by those who wish them harm."

She spoke confidently, but it was in an attempt to reassure herself, dreaming of becoming a mother to a hungry nestling or two! She wouldn't mind the hungry screeches and constant feeding! With her partner to help her, they would get through those first early weeks of no rest, always being on call!

The kingfisher's journey of inquiry led her to the flamboyant Indian Peafowl, whose feathers danced in a kaleidoscope of colours. "In a world of nests," she said, "make yours a beacon of your spirit. It will call to your young and guide them home."

"Mud, mud, glorious mud!" remarked the Flamingo, drawing some of this damp commodity towards her feet using her bill. "Mix it with small stones, straw and feathers, make it about five potatoes high, and it hardens into a nice sturdy nest right here on the ground!"
Kora thanked her, but was dubious about all the mud.

The Sanderling, a master of the shoreline, spoke of the importance of a sturdy base, one that could stand against the storms that might flood her chosen tree. "Your nest must be high, but not too high," she advised, her feet skimming the surface of the water as she searched for food.

The Tree Sparrow, with her industrious nature, suggested that patience and persistence would be her greatest allies. "Do not be disheartened if your first attempts do not succeed," she trilled. "For every fallen twig is a lesson learnt."

The Yellow-Chevroned Parakeet, with a squawk of laughter, offered a final piece of advice. "Your home will not be perfect, Kora," she said. "But if you fill it with love, it will be the most perfect nest of all."
Armed with the collective knowledge of their feathered friends, Kora and her mate set out to find the ideal location for their tree-bound abode.

They searched through the forest, sharp eyes peeled for the perfect branch, the perfect blend of concealment and visibility. Days turned into weeks, and Kora's determination grew stronger with each failed attempt. Her beak grew sore from carrying twigs, and her wings tired from the endless flights between earth and sky.

But she persevered, driven by the image of her eggs nestled in the soft embrace of a basket woven by her own beak.
A wise old Augsburger Chicken came to visit. "Just outside the farm where I live is a splendid old oak tree. Your little ones couldn't be safer than in a nest in its strong branches."
Eagerly, Kora and her mate flew to seek out the oak tree.

Finally, as the sun kissed the horizon, casting the forest in a golden hue, they spotted it. A mighty oak with a branch that dipped just right, surrounded by a canopy of leaves that whispered secrets of the wind. The branch was sturdy, yet flexible, a silent promise of protection. It felt like they'd been given the best present ever!

The day came when Kora laid two eggs, their smooth shells a canvas for her dreams. And so she waited, her heart beating in time with the whispers of the forest. When the eggs hatched, and two tiny beaks crack­ed open to reveal the world, she knew that she had made a nest that was uniquely hers, a sanctuary that sang with the promise of freedom and love.
Rainbow Bee Eaters visited her, their iridescent plumage a symbol of the beauty that awaited within. They spoke of the import­ance of the first flight, of the moment when her child­ren would leave the safety of the nest to em­brace the bound­less sky.

One morning, as the dew kissed the leaves, the Rainbow Bee Eaters returned. Their advice was simple, yet profound. "Guide them gently," they cooed. "But do not hold them back. For in their hearts, they carry the wisdom of the kingfisher, the grace of the hummingbird and the strength of the oak."
Kora watched her babies with a mix of pride and apprehension. The day of their first flight grew nearer, and she knew she would soon have to release them into the sky she had come to cherish. Yet, she took comfort in the knowledge that she had provided them with a home that was a tapestry of the forest's best lessons.

The wind whispered through her feathers, echoing the words of the owl, "Your home will not be perfect, but filled with love, it is enough."
The second fledgling watched its sibling's triumph and, with a burst of courage, it too took to the air. Their cries grew fainter as they disappeared into the horizon, leaving Kora alone in the now empty nest. She felt a profound sense of accomplish­ment, for she had not only built a home that defied tradition but had raised her young to embrace the skies.

The forest grew quiet again, save for the gentle rustle of leaves and the distant chorus of birds. Kora and her helpmeet looked around, at the branches that had borne witness to her journey. The sky was no longer just a place; it was the play­ground of her children, a reminder that she had created a legacy that soared higher than any earth-bound tunnel could ever reach.
