The first painted eggs came from Mesopotamia, and because eggs were forbidden food during Lent, people painted eggs while Lent was being observed—after Lent, they would eat the eggs on Easter Day.

Beautifully decorated eggs “pysanka” are associated with Ukraine, and the oldest painted egg that was unearthed in northern Ukraine is dated to the end of the 17th century.

“I’ve written a postcard to my aunty to tell her about our amazing safari!” said Carver. “She’ll wish she was here! Where’s the nearest postbox?”
Sif shielded her eyes and rotated 360°, elaborately scanning the horizon. “I don’t think they’ve thought to provide a postbox here, Carver. How remiss of them!” Seeing Carver’s ears beginning to droop, Sif added, “Don’t worry, you can give your card to reception at the hotel to post.”

Waddling in the cool waters off the coast of South Africa, dressed up in their best black tie, the little penguins keep a sharp eye out on the waves, you never know when you'll have a surprise visitor!

“Ooh, it's just starting to get a bit cool, Carver!” said Schnupfen. “Can you hold my map and itinerary while I dig out my scarf?"
Carver good-naturedly took charge of Schnupfen's possessions while she emptied her rucksack of a pack of sandwiches wrapped in greaseproof paper, a Thermos flask, a pair of galoshes, a bag of chocolate peanuts, a paperback thriller, a bottle of orange squash, an address book, some postage stamps, an assortment of different coloured biros, a bottle opener, a couple of old bus tickets, a handful of golden and silver moles, a door key, some very old receipts, a screwdriver, a bottle of multivitamins, a lottery ticket and a selection of rather battered sachets of salt, sugar and salad cream before locating the scarf right at the bottom. This she donned and then Carver helped her put everything back in her rucksack.

Translucent in color, these colorful creatures anchor themselves to the roots and rocks in the warm waters in the Indian River. Just don't startle them, they don't respond well!

Mrs. P was distracted by the sounds of loud rustling as Carver unfolded a very large tourist map, in the course of which he succeeded in knocking Mrs. P’s sunhat off.
“Put that away, do!” said Mrs. P, in some irritation. “We’re about to pose with this amazing creature—the picture will be of your map if you don’t fold it up pronto!”
