Hubris is questing! Episode 1/25

It was a hot day while Anna was out for her daily stroll with Poofy her French Poodle. Suddenly Hubris arrives and hands her a letter. “What’s this?” she questions. “I have no idea.” replies Hubris. “I found it with your name and address on it and thought it best to get it to you ASAP in case it is important.” “Oh dear! I best go inside and open it up. There does not appear to even be a return address on it.”

“Open it! Open it! Open it!” exclaims Hubris. “Hold on. Give me a moment.” states Anna. “Let me read this. Dear Anna. CONGRATULATIONS! You have been selected as this year’s winner of the Creative Otherworldy Warehouse Sweepstakes! You have won an unlimited shopping spree, max value $100,000,000 Golden Moles to spend at your leisure.” Anna begins to cry tears of joy. “Do you know what this means Hubris?” “Ummm we get lots of cool things?” “Oh silly! No, I will finally be able to get the things I have wanted and needed! Hang on there is more. Please stand by for your personal escort from COW…..I wonder what that means? Oh well, let’s get going!” “Ummm, aren’t we supposed to wait around?” Anna was not one for waiting and scooped up her purse and rushed out on her adventure.

It was all Poofy could do to keep up to her and she was running on 4 legs! Suddenly from afar they all hear a shout, “Heya! Where do yall think you’re going? Can you not read and follow simple instructions? We *were* very explicit when we said please stand by for your escort.” Poofy and Hubris were relieved to slow down as Anna spun around to see who was talking. Approaching the gang was a Golden Mole-y Cash Cow. “How yall doing? I see you are excited to get started. Let me introduce myself. I am Goldie and am here representing Creative Otherworldly Warehouse, better known as COW. Yes I know, I know. A cow representing COW. I’m just here to help guide you so you do not go, shall we say hogwild spending more than your allotted prize.” Anna barely pays any attention to Goldie as she just wants to get going. “First of all,” states Anna, “I want to stop renting and have a home all of my own. It would be great if there was space for all of my friends as well. Property is a good investment. Is it not?” So off the misfit crew went downtown to see what all might be available for sale. “Oh how I would love to someday own my own lil boutique and trinket shoppe but I must dream. First I must be practical.” states Anna. “But Anna, could you not own it all?” questions Hubris with dollar signs in their eyes.

Just outside of town is Lakeside Lots. While Anna was excited at all the waterfront lots up for sale, Poofy was a little uncertain. What would all that water do to her beautifully styled hair? And don’t mention the humidity levels! “I just cannot choose! I love them all! I want all my friends and family to be able to come and visit. I think I am going to buy them all!” Goldie just stands back and shakes her head, oh what to do with the nouveau riche.

“You know what goes nice with a new home Poofy? A brand new car! Just think we can be rid of the clunker of a truck and we could even get a convertible so you can feel the wind in your hair!” Wind in the hair? Nooooooo! Poofy was seriously starting to wonder if Anna was out to undo her stunning coif. She knows she never even sticks her head out the window! Only fools do that. “Oh Mr. Sales-guin what do you recommend? Hot pink or pearlized white?”

“Poofy I think we need a bit of a break. How about a stroll through an art gallery?” Anna sped off in her brand new convertible to the local art gallery. Poor Poofy. There goes her hair style. Maybe inside there will be something shiny and reflective inside that she can check for misplaced hairs.

“Oh Poofy! Look at these wonderful paintings! Which one do you think we should get for our house? I am thinking that one in the middle.” Poofy, in reality could care less about the paintings. After that wild ride over she was looking for a mirror where she could check her hair. It just had to be a mess! Anna has a very leaden foot.

“And these sculptures!” exclaims Anna with delight. “I want them all!” Poofy could not believe her ears. If Anna kept spending like this would there even be room for her? And what about all her hair supplies? She needs a lot of product to keep looking so posh and proper. Where is Goldie when you need her? Somebody needs to put a halt to all this spending.

Moving on downtown Anna and Poofy found themselves in a lovely clothing boutique. “I can get into this.” thinks Poofy. “Maybe a new bandanna or some sunglasses” Anna is stunned by the selection of sweaters and cannot choose. There were even some that were cow patterned! Speaking of cows, where is that silly escort Goldie? It made sense that she was not allowed into the art gallery after the Great Livestock Crash of 2015 but a clothing store?

Right next door to the clothing boutique is a very posh perfume shoppe and Anna cannot contain her excitement. “Oh I have never had any perfume that has cost more that 20GMs before. These all smell so exquisite! Poofy you must help me choose the right scent!” ACHOO!!! While her hair products may have some scent this was a little extreme for Poofy and she could not wait to escape this store. It was an olfactory offense!

“There you are Goldie! We were wondering where you had gotten off to.” “Well I had to visit a field to do some cow business and then it was a challenge to catch back up to you. You have rather very much a lead foot Anna in that new car. How about lunch?” Lunch? Did somebody say lunch? Poofy knows she has worked up quite the appetite following after Anna and could deal with some sweet treats and whatever else was on the menu.

“Wow!” thinks Poofy. “Who knew such fine Italian dining could be so, well fine?” She and Anna settled in to enjoy a lovely, all expenses paid meal with a fine bottle of red wine. “Must not get that on my hair as it will stain.” thinks Poofy. In the background the charming penguin played his accordion somewhat off tune. “Oh Poofy, wouldn’t it be amazing if we could actually travel to places like Italy and Sweden?”

All filled up from her meal Anna carried on with her shopping spree. Next up was the fancy jewellers. It was a very hard choice but her posh pooch needed a new charm for her necklace and well she needed some new jewels herself. She emerged under the watchful eye of Goldie with some wrapped packages for herself and Poofy. “Don’t open it now as we don’t want to ruin the surprise.” Anna giggled.

Finally Anna started to show some sense and entered the appliance store. Having bought a whole row of waterfront properties she better get on furnishing them. Poofy is just stunned by the colours that everything is now available in. Thankfully avocado green is no longer one of them. But where is the coffee maker? Don’t people have priorities?

From appliances to furniture Anna is still showing her sensibility much to the relief of Goldie. How can one have a party for their friends if there is no where for them to sit? While Poofy does not see anywhere comfy enough for her she is startled to notice a half crazed salesperson trying to stage the dining room set. If they aren’t careful they are going to drop all those dishes! The mess! And mess means messy hair! Oh no! Anna we gotta go!

“Well this is a nice change of pace.” thinks Poofy. “”All this yummy food we can stock up on in the houses. You never know who is going to stop by and if they are vegan or not. So we best be prepared.” Anna on the other hand was busy filling her cart with assorted party beverages and some party snacks. Perhaps if the grocer allowed cattle in, Goldie could have been a wise advisor to her but sadly once again she was locked out only to stare in disbelief. Anna was a typical COW winner.

“Now THIS is the life!” thinks Poofy. “Why didn’t we come here first and spend all day here?” As one might imagine Poofy lives for the salon and getting her hair done. A fresh set makes a poodle feel so sparkling and cheery. Now what can they do for Anna? Those curls of hers are soooo unruly. Maybe there are some magazines to flip through while waiting.

What is this? A travel magazine? Oh the places we could go! “Poofy look!” Anna is full of delight. “The world awaits us. Tropical beaches. The North Pole. Australia. Think of where all we could go. So much fun and relaxation and exploration. Don’t you want to go Poofy? Pack our bags and hop a plane? Leave that silly cow behind since no airlines will allow cows on board and escape this town for awhile!”

Before Poofy knew it she was whisked off to an exotic yoga studio and much to her surprise Goldie was able to come. Thanks to changes in airline regulations and paperwork from COW Goldie was allowed to board the flight. Poofy did not know if that was more surprising or the fact there were penguins running a yoga studio! Cats she could understand but penguins?!?!

Following in the footsteps of a rich billionaire Anna and crew are then shipped off into space. They found a cheaper flight that was built by monkeys. Poofy hopes it was not real monkeys who built the ship but the views are incredible. And her hair stays put in zero gravity thanks to all of the product she added to it. She was warned it may be flammable but so far she is safe. Anna is just overjoyed. She always wanted to travel and dreamed of being an astronaut.

Landing in Sweden Anna and Poofy get to go for a dogsled ride and enjoy the mountain views. Even the Yeti monster cannot dampen their joy. Finally some fun and excitement in their boring life. Goldie and COW have brought so much joy. Who knew what a random letter could lead to? Anna cannot even recall ever entering the contest but she certainly enjoys the prize.

“What’s this!?!” exclaims Poofy. Exhausted Anna is fast asleep and Poofy cannot believe her eyes. Was it ever real? “Hubris did it actually happen? Did Anna win that contest? Was there ever a cow called Goldie who went on that shopping spree with us? Did I really go to space and Sweden and learn yoga from some silly penguins? Am I just dreaming? Was Anna dreaming? What’s going on?”

“Surprise Poofy! It was real” states Hubris. “We are heading downtown today as soon as Anna awakens.” states Goldie. “We have some more business to take care of as soon as the shoppes all open.” With Anna finally awake the gang headed downtown to wait for the stores to open. Poofy was glad she had time to ensure her hair was just perfect. When Anna offered to drive everyone declined and said they would prefer the walk. “I don’t think I will readily fit in your car Anna.” said Goldie.

“Now my duty as your escort is coming to an end I have one final duty.” said Goldie. “And that is to give you the balance of your prize!” Hubris near falls over in amazement. “Is all that money for me?” asks Anna. “Yes,” replies Goldie. “Save it. Invest it. And spend it wisely. No more crazy shopping sprees you have had your fun and own a tonne of property now for you and your friends. It is time to be a grown up and responsible member of society. Us here at COW will be watching you…” And with that Goldie disappeared leaving Anna and the crew to wonder how to proceed waiting for the bank to open. It was the beginning of a new chapter.
