When Kerry grew up, he went straight to the railway to look for a job. He began working as a freight train guard, riding in the caboose, responsible for keeping the train safe.

Sometimes Kerry worked on trains to and from the city, where pets have less time for others and are always in a rush. But it takes time to travel between large cities. Pets with nothing to do enjoyed talking to Kerry on the long rides.

Kerry loved working on branch lines. There was more to do, with lots of little stations, pets getting on and off all the time, all of them friendly and talkative.

When Kerry worked on trains to the harbour or the airport, he met pets from other countries! Sometimes it was hard to understand them, but this brought the best out of Kerry. It meant longer conversations and taking more notice of what people said and what they were carrying.

One day Kerry was walking between two platforms and slipped on wet stones. When he got up, he rushed to the train, but found he was on the wrong one! He ended up taking tickets from wizards and witches. They were a strange lot, but as ever, new faces meant new friends.

Kerry told passengers how he met his wife on a train. Even those who didn't care about trains all liked a good love story. Now Kerry found it even easier to make friends whilst taking tickets!

Some pets use the same train every day. Kerry got to know a lot of them really well. At the end of the line they found it hard to leave the train and go home, they stayed and talked with Kerry instead!

Kerry’s manager told him he was too old to be a guard any more. Kerry smiled and said friendly words, because he had spent so many years doing so. But when he went home, his heart sank very low. This had to happen, but he had wished it never would.

The manager felt dreadful about Kerry being forced to retire, so he had a special train run in Kerry's honour. Pets from miles around came to ride on it, for one last chance to thank the friendly bear who had made their journeys happier.

The old railway had drivers and ticket sellers, but no guards. Kerry hosted caboose rides and told pets about railway history. Now he was making new friends and was happy again! Mrs Bear knew a few hours a day with a happy husband is better than all day with a sad one.
