Ulle begins his tour of "Maples, Moose & Mounties - Newfoundland & Labrador" by downloading a map of specially chosen locations!
Newfoundland Fort Amherst
The original fort dates back to the 1700's but you won't find remnants of that here today, but you'll still be able to see the gunnery and some of the artifacts from World War II, when Fort Amherst was part of keeping the German U-Boats away. The current lighthouse on the Fort was constructed after the war and stands as a warning beacon to the ships at sea.

“Listen to this, Frosty,” said Ulle. “’Culinary expert Delia Smith described maple syrup to be a unique ingredient, smooth and silky-textured, with a sweet, distinctive flavour—hints of caramel with overtones of toffee—and a rare colour, amber set alight. The maple flavour is uniquely different from any other.’”
“We trust our Delia,” intoned Frosty solemnly. “Pass the jug!”
Newfoundland The Battery at St. John
Considered the welcome wagon of St. John's, the Battery is located at on the Signal Hill area, and seafarers pass the neighborhood before reaching St. John's proper.

Ulle opened his rucksack to change his hat. Brigit could see Ulle had a large, floppy sunhat, a balaclava, a rain hat, a woolly bobble hat, a beanie, a deerstalker hat and a swimming cap!
“Did you bring a fez too?” Brigit asked Ulle.
Newfoundland St. John's City Scape
Color abounds in the city of St. John's. You'll see the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist rising above the rest, welcoming all.

“Wouldn't it be lovely to live in a lighthouse like this one pictured in our itinerary in Nova Scotia? So romantic!" mused Ulle, nibbling on a taffy lolly.
"Well, I don't know," said Daba. "It's not all about drinking coffee and gazing at the sea. You have to run up and down stairs, operate the light and the foghorn, and there may be no running water or electricity apart from a generator."
Ulle considered this. "Mine would be a luxurious, converted, non-operational lighthouse, then."
Newfoundland St. John
Ready for a different vacation? Head over to St. John, the capital of Newfoundland. Founded in the 1600's the city is full of colorful row houses and deep history!

@ Newfoundland Avalon Shore
“Ooh, it's just starting to drizzle, Ulle!” said Chocolicious. “Can you hold my torch and map while I dig out my Pac-a-Mac?"
Ulle good-naturedly took charge of Chocolicious's possessions while she emptied her rucksack of a pack of sandwiches, a Thermos flask, a pair of galoshes, a bag of toffees, a paperback novel, a bottle of mineral water, an address book, some postage stamps, an assortment of different coloured biros, a bottle opener, a couple of old train tickets, a handful of golden and silver moles, a hotel key, some shopping receipts and a selection of rather battered sachets of salt, sugar and tomato ketchup before locating the Pac-a-Mac right at the bottom. This she donned and then Ulle helped her put everything back in her rucksack.

Refreshing blue waters of the Avalon shoreline stretch for miles in either direction, don your bathing attire and take a swim, it's not nearly as cold as one might think!

Minerva was distracted by the sounds of loud rustling as Ulle unfolded a very large tourist map, in the course of which he succeeded in knocking Minerva’s hat off. “Put that away, do!” said Minerva, irritated. “We’re about to pose on either side of this amazing scene—the picture will all be of your map if you don’t fold it up pronto!”
Newfoundland Avalon Peninsula
The largest Peninsula in Newfoundland, you'll find about half of the population here. Bring your archeological tools with you, you can hunt some of the Precambrian fossils found here as well!

Ulle was very happy to meet Flora here! They both swapped tales of their experiences of their travels so far!

Layers of sedimentary rock create a cake-like display on the cliffsides of King's Cove. Geologists adore travelling here to see the layers of rock, formed over millions of years to study.

Once a "huge" town of 345 residents, back in 1940, the population has dwindled to about 90 in 2016! So if it's a quiet place of solitude to come to and contemplate the meaning of life, this is the place for you!

"Sweetie! Chef said he's making beaver tails for our packed lunch tomorrow!" whispered Ulle in agitation. "How horrid! We can't eat those!"
"Relax, Ulle!" said Sweetie soothingly. "It's a sugary pastry in the shape of a beaver tail, sprinkled with cinnamon or with jam spread on top! No pets are harmed!"

Driftwoods abound the shore lines of Newfoundland, begging to be taken home and used as an art sculpture in the yard. Alas, how to get it in the boot of the car? And oh, yes, clear customs? Better leave it and take a photo instead!

“Let's hope Foxy doesn't get as seasick on these Canadian lakes as he did on Lake Windermere in England that time, Ulle!” said Icy, studying the future itinerary.
"Can you get seasick on a lake?" asked Ulle.
"Oh yes, indeedy," said Icy.

When the tide is low, you'll want to see if there are tidal pools of life nestled in the rocks here, but be sure to watch your paws, as the briny kelp can add to the slickness of the rocks here.

Because so much of Newfoundland is sitting on the Bay, you'll find many marinas along the coastline. A few steps on the pier and you'll see the sense of humor of those who named their boats. Sea Senor; Water You Lookin' At?; Feelin' Naughty; Knot A Care, can you come up with a good one?

“I’ve come prepared for anything, Ulle,” responded Sam. “There’s deck shoes, snowshoes, tennis shoes, flip-flops, flippers, walking boots, Wellington boots—you name it, I’ve got it!”

The beaches at Stephenville are littered with things left after the tide rolls out. They say one man's trash is another's treasure. You'll find bits of interesting debris padding along here. Different rocks and glasses, worn smooth by the constant tumble of the sea.

In the most Eastern limit of the Bay of St. George, you'll find this town sports the Barachois Search and Rescue, which assists with water rescues and searches of those in distress. Not for the faint of heart, for sure, but a rewarding profession!

"Oh yes, we're bound to. Gosh, Ulle, do you remember those sharks, and the octopus as well? Poor Fresco took one look and hid in the bottom of the boat!" responded Tweety Pi.

As Ulle's tour of "Maples, Moose & Mounties - Newfoundland & Labrador" comes to an end, he noshes some poutine and is surprised to discover Canada left him a parting gift!
Broken Boardwalk
Sometimes being one of the most popular destinations around comes with downsides. In this case, the heavy daily use of the boardwalk has resulted in broken boards in need of repair. Visiting pets hope the boardwalk will be fixed soon.
Labrador Ice Berg
Traveling all the way from Greenland, icebergs can be seen off the coast of Labrador, sailing under their own power, with a destination only they know. You're lucky to see them gliding on the current, full of ice of ages untold.
